Hello everyone!

Firstly, some exciting news, as part of our IPC unit ‘ Saving the World,’ the class will be going on a field trip to Gyeongju Bird Park and Botanical garden. Mrs Sim’s class; will also be joining us as they are studying a similar unit. The trip will take place Tuesday 17th May, and kindly request that parents contribute 15,000 won to help cover entrance fees. Please, fill out the permission form in the link provided. A shock in IPC as Mr Morgan cruelly destroyed our lovely display. This led to the children learning about deforestation: why it happens, and the impact this has on our planet. Also, in IPC, the children had a lesson about different animals that live in the rainforest. Their first task was sorting animals in different ways and then into which layer of the rainforest each animal is found. They also created an animal fact file and included it in a food chain.

In English, we continued to learn the story by heart with actions. We also spent some time writing character descriptions, using inverted commas, and using commas to clarify meaning.

In math, we moved on to multiplication strategies, using maths facts to help us multiply and divide and looking at common factors and common multiplies.

A fantastic first week back after the Easter break as we start our 3rd and final term of this academic year. Term 3 is always a busy Term, so please keep checking here and the newsletter for information about upcoming events. The class welcomed another new student to class, Anita, the students were very welcoming, and Anita settled in well and made a great start.

For IPC, we started our new unit called ‘Saving World’; the main focus of this unit is rainforests. Just like every new unit for IPC, we start with our entry point, a hook to get the children engaged and excited about their learning. So we made a rainforest display, full of trees, plants and animals, in our classroom. Next, this was followed up; by a ‘knowledge harvest’ to see what children already know and what they want to find out.

In English, the children started a new unit around adventures stories. Like with previous units, I have created a story for the children to memorize and learn by heart to help them with; the structure, features and ideas for their own writing. We will also use this text as the basis for other lessons to help improve the children’s writing.

In maths, we are revisiting fractions, the students have solved problems involving equivalent fractions and adding and subtracting fractions.

Hello everyone!

The end of term has finally arrived. Once again, the students have impressed me with their hard work and the progress they have made this term. I look forward to the new term and the challenges and fun it brings.

Much of this week; was spent finishing off our ‘Exit Point’ models and preparing scripts ready to present to Ms. Sim’s class. I was super impressed, very proud of the whole class and how confidently they spoke and shared their knowledge of a particular area we covered in our IPC unit.

In English, we continued our work on List Poems, ending the week with writing our own based on a topic of the student’s choice.

In maths, we spent the week looking at angles and playing some Kahoot quizzes to review different areas we have covered this term.

With the end of the term insight, there is still so much fantastic learning happening as we begin to wind down, ready for some end of term fun.

We also welcomed another new student to our class; Bernardo came for a visit on Thursday and had his first full day on Friday. The class were very excited, very welcoming, and everyone was super helpful.

In English, we will spend the last two weeks looking at poetry with a focus on list poems and poetic devices. To start this as a class we created a list poem about school. We played a quick game of word association and then the children could choose their favourite word and then add to it to turn it into a line for our poem. I asked them to order themselves, we then read it aloud and changed the order to improve our poem. Also, the students spend some time exploring Kennings poems. They explored the features of these and had fun creating their own about an animal.

In IPC, the students spent the week working on their Exit Point. In pairs, they choose an area that we covered in this unit so that they could create an interactive model so that they can explain what they have learnt to other classes next week.

For maths the students got to grips with some geometry, focussing on position and direction. The students solved problems involving coordinates, translation and reflection. Next week, we will spend a bit of time on angles as well as reviewing everything we have learnt this term.

As the COVID-19 cases increased, it was inevitable that the school would end up online. I have been impressed with how well the children adapted to online learning; they have done well using the Google classroom format and worked hard from home on all activities. I hope this is the last time we use online learning as attending school is a much better environment. For each subject, we did our best to carry on with learning as if we were at school using the same content and activities, slightly adapted so that work could be done at home.

In English, the students; planned and wrote a newspaper article about a natural disaster. Over the week the students took a paragraph at a time and carefully thought about the features that should be included and what they have learnt.

In maths, last week the focus was multiplication, and this week the student’s revised division. They used their knowledge of their times tables to help them solve a variety of problems using different methods.

For IPC, the students looked at three different processes; the phases of the moon, how clouds are formed, and the water cycles. They looked at the key terms, made visual representations, and wrote explanations.

A short week with Tuesday being a national holiday, don’t forget that next Wednesday is also a national holiday due to the presidential election.Sadly, Friday was cut short, but I hope to see everyone on Monday.

This week, in English, the students carried on their work around newspaper reports. We looked at direct and indirect speech, writing conclusions, technical vocabulary, and completed a comprehension activity. Next week, the students will start writing their newspaper reports.

In maths, we revised multiplication; the students worked on mental maths strategies, multiplying 3 digits by 1 digit, multiplying 4 digits by 1 digit, and multiplying 2 digits by 2 digits.

During IPC lessons, the students looked at different types of rocks; there were rocks samples for the children to explore and they answered a series of questions. They also looked at day and night and how seasons occur. They used a globe and a torch, working together; they needed to explain how night and day work.

Another action-packed week in Mr. Dunn’s class as we passed the halfway mark of term two.

In English, the class has been trying to memorize a newspaper report and came up with actions to go with the text to help them with structure, features, and vocabulary. Also, we took a closer look at some of the features of newspapers, such: as writing headlines, direct and indirect speech, and writing an introduction for a newspaper.

For maths, the students have spent the week revising addition and subtraction; they looked at different methods to solve these questions and tacked word problems.

During IPC, the students started an art project that look’s at local geography. They chose a local landform or water body and used this as their inspiration for their artwork. The students will also include a written part to go along with their artwork explaining what it is? And why it’s special? Also, the students looked into the layers of soil, and different types of erosion. The students made a diorama showing what they had learnt about the layers of the soil.

Another fun-filled week in Mr. Dunn’s class, with lots of different learning covered, new challenges, and hard work.

This week, in maths, the students looked at ordering and comparing decimals and converting decimals to fractions and vice versa. To help, the students looked at fraction walls and changed these into decimal walls.

We have come to the end of our story writing unit. The students had to plan and write a story. I was impressed; with the student’s creativity and the improvements, they have made. Towards the end of the week, we started our new unit on Newspaper Reports and will continue this over the next few weeks.

To start the week in IPC, we ‘asked the expert’ to fill in a worksheet with information about each other’s biomes that they had researched. Also, the students made tour guides for a country showing off the natural landforms people can visit and explore. Another lesson; was spent looking at the advantages and disadvantages of human impact on the local area. We then debated whether Ulsan should build a dam and whether this was a good idea.

It was a super busy week, with lots of learning going on, sorry as I did not take many pictures of all activities.

In maths, the students worked on time, converting between 12 and 24 hour times as well as looking at schedules and timetables, reading and interpreting these.

In English, we spent each day writing a paragraph at a time of our portal story, to model to the students and make sure they follow the structure correctly. Then they would write their own paragraph based on their plan, making sure they think carefully about the devices we have learnt this term and making sure they include them.

To start the week off in IPC, the students looked back at each of the lessons to remind them of the learning and help make a display. The students looked at different types of landforms, making a scrapbook page with images, drawings, and lots of information, from the research they made. The students also presented the presentations they had made on biomes, they explained, the location, climate, animals, plants, and features of each biome.

Firstlty, report cards have been sent home with your child today and Parent Teacher Meetings will be held in Week 4 after the Seollal break. An eventful week, we celebrated Seollal as a School on Thursday, it was wonderful to see so many children wearing hanbok or traditional dress from their country. The children spent some time during their Korean lessons learning about the holiday and playing some traditional Korean games.

A very sad end to the week as we say goodbyes to Lois Lee, who has been a member of the school since FS2. The whole HFS community will miss her and her family, I know she will go on to do very well at her new school and we wish her success in the future. Good luck Lois!

This week, in English, we have been writing our own portal story. We took each day to write one paragraph so we could think carefully about the structure and features to include. In maths, the students worked on adding and subtracting decimals as well as looking at money problems.

In IPC, the students researched one natural disaster to find out: what they are, where they happen, how they are formed, how they are measured, and how to stay safe. They also created their own television news report on natural disasters so they could look into one that has happened recently to explain the impact they have on people.

Recently, in PE the students have been looking at invasion games, the students have been able to work on dribbling, passing as well as attacking and defending skills.
