Term 2 Week 2 Update

Hello everyone!

Another week down, another new student joined us; I would like to welcome Rithika Krishnakumar, who was a little nervous at the start, but all her classmates were kind and supportive made her feel comfortable and a part of the class.

In IPC, we continued to explore planet earth; this week, we looked at biomes, the students are researching different biomes and making presentations around these. Also, we looked at the structure of the earth with each child making a paper model with information about each part.

In maths, the students worked on mental maths strategies, timetables, factors, and multiples; we played some fun games to help us remember our maths facts.

This week in English, we continued our work around portal stories; the students looked at different objects that could be a portal to a new world and wrote about them before moving on to writing setting descriptions.

That’s all for this week, have a great weekend everyone!

Term 2 Week 1 Update

Hello everyone!

It has been such a lovely first week back after the winter break, we welcome two new students Ayaan and Laura, who both settled in very well and made an excellent start. Below is a link to this term’s curriculum overview so you can see what your child will be covering this term.

In maths, we the students looked at place value, this time focusing on decimals. They spent the week adding and subtracting decimals, rounding decimals, and multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100, and 1000.

For IPC, we have started a new unit called ‘ What a Wonderful World,’ discovering all about planet earth and all its geological and scientific processes. As an Entry Point to this unit the students have started making their own calendar with the theme of planet earth, they found pictures to represent each month and designed a front cover.

In English, just like in the first term to help the students really get to grips with story writing, the students have started to memorise a short story based on Harry Potter. The students will then cover lots of new learning around this text and it will help them plan and write their own. This week we looked at how Harry’s feelings changed from paragraph to paragraph and ‘hot seated’ him to get to know him better. The class also role-played the dialogue scene between Harry Potter and Lord Voldermort to then help them learn about inverted commas.

End of Term 1 Update

Dear Parents,

Apologies for not sending a final update for the first term already as you know it was a super busy final day. I hope you all enjoyed the Winter Show, each performance was wonderful and the whole school had a lot of fun. Sadly, I do not have any pictures to upload from the Winter Show or the final week. I will try to hunt some down and post these in an update, I assume a video will be sent of all the performances soon.

All the children have had an excellent first term and I am very proud of all of them for the work, effort, and achievements each of them has achieved. I look forward to term two and the new learning we will explore together.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy new year, I hope everyone has a restful and joyful break.

Week 15 Update

Hello everyone!

Next week is the final week of term and will end with the Winter Show. For a class performance, the students will sing the 12 days of Christmas, each child has a day to represent each. It would be great if each student could wear something festive or festive colours for this performance. Please, don’t feel the need to buy anything new for this.

In English, we are coming to the end of our syllabic poetry, I asked the students to create an anthology of some of their favorite poems they have looked at using bookcreator.

In maths, the children spent the week looking at data handling, creating graphs from data as well as analysing and interpreting different graphs.

For IPC, we had some great fun looking at non-Newtonian fluids, the students were able to explore this by playing with a mixture of cornstarch and water. They were able to see that when a force is applied quickly to the mixture it was a solid, but when a force is applied slowly the mixture is a liquid. They then created an advertisement to sell this mixture as a toy. The students also, explored glass making, by blowing bubbles as Homework the students will need to research the glass making process.

That’s all for this week, have a great weekend, and see you all next Friday for the Winter Show.

Week 14 Update

Hello everyone!

Only two weeks to go now until the end of term, this term has flown by! This term will end with the Winter Show so the class has spent some of this week practicing our song ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’.

On Tuesday, the class went on a trip to Onggi Village, linked to our IPC unit ‘Making New Materials’. It was a lot of fun and a great experience, the only downside was the weather. The children were able to make their own clay bowls or cups and learn about the process of pottery, they were also able to learn about Korean history at the folk museum and make a calendar for 2022. On Wednesday, there was a follow-up lesson, where the children made their own leaflet about Onggi Village.

In maths, this week the children have worked on adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator. Next week we will be moving on to data handling.

That’s all for this week, have a great weekend!

Week 13 Update

Hello, everyone!

The end of term is in sight, Christmas is almost here, we still have so much learning to do and lots of festive treats to look forward to. Don’t forget next week is our class trip to Onggi Village, please make sure the children are wearing their uniform and that they have a snack and packed lunch.

This week in English the students carried on their work around Haiku, we also had some fun and got creative with our poetry writing, using ‘Blackout Poetry’ and ‘Paint Chip’ techniques.

In maths, this week’s main focus has been fractions, the students worked on finding equivalent fractions, comparing, and ordering fractions. We will continue our work on fractions next week as we start to look at adding and subtracting fractions.

For IPC, the students have come to the end of the science aspect of our ‘Making New Materials Unit’. This week they conducted experiments to see if all metals are magnetic and separating mixtures using different processes. For the rest of the term, the students will focus more on history and technology to finish this unit off.

That’s all for this week have a great weekend!

Week 12 Update

Hello everyone!

Firstly, some exciting news! I and Mr De Klerk have organized a trip to Onggi Village on Tuesday 30, this fits in nicely with our unit ‘Making New Materials,’ as the students will be able to look at pottery and its history. I kindly request that you fill out the permission form linked below.

This week the students have continued their work around properties of materials by looking at insulators and conductors. They tested different materials to see which were the best at transferring the least amount of heat by placing ice in different cups and seeing how long it took to melt. They also experimented with a circuit to see which materials transfer electricity.

In maths, with have been looking at angles. The students, looked at different types of angles, drawing angles, measuring angles, as well as calculating missing angles on a point and a line. We went to the hall and made different angles with our bodies and introduced angles on a point and a line using the benches.

That’s all for this week, have a great weekend!

Global Citizenship Week

Hello everyone

I hope you all had a nice long weekend! Last week, was a short week, where we spent our time doing lots of different activities around Global Citizenship. I decided to focus on a particular global issue, climate change, and look deeper into this. In the week, leading up to Global Citizenship Week, I showed the students the news to introduce this topic and show why it was currently in the headlines.

The students did a number of different activities across the week. Firstly, we looked at what is climate change, defined some of the key vocabularies, wrote a definition, and looked at the causes and effects. Also, the class did some work on Greta Thunberg, completing a reading comprehension to find out more about her. Over each day the students also worked on a large project, researched a country to find out: How the country is being affected by climate change, What the leaders are saying about this issue, and what they are planning to do about it. Another project was art-based, the students designed a poster showing the impact of climate change and came up with a slogan to persuade people to protect the earth. Finally, the children looked at what they could do and how they could change their daily lives to help tackle climate change.

Week 10 Update

Firstly I would like to welcome Ester, who joined our class today and settled in really well, the class did a wonderful job of looking after her and helping her out around the classroom and school. Secondly, don’t forget next week is Global Citizenship week, this will mean that we are off timetable and the class will be doing lots of different work around climate change. It is also a short week, there is no school on Thursday and Friday.

This week, the children have continued their work around different materials and their properties. In pairs, the students experiment with different solids and mixed them with liquids to see if they were soluble or insoluble. They also explored reversible and irreversible changes by cooking muffins and mixing bicarbonate of soda with vinegar to see the chemical reaction take place.

In English, the children wrote their own Haiku this week and also got to grips with some SPAG (spelling, punctuation, and grammar) by identifying different word types and looking at noun phrases.

In maths, the children spent the week solving problems around multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, and 1000.

Week 9 Update

Hello everyone.

What a fantastic way to way to end the week with our Halloween party and all the children had a great time. There was lots of candy eaten, many games played and everyone looked very spooky or cute in their costumes. Thank you to all the parents that volunteered and helped create an amazing event!

In English the children have started a poetry unit, we are looking at a Haiku and we are using Studio Ghibli animation movies to help inspire our writing. The children looked at images and clips of Howl’s Moving Castle and create various descriptive phrases and sentences around these.

For IPC, I have decided to switch our units slightly, we are now doing a unit called ‘Making New Materials’, we will pick up ‘Going with the Flow’ later this year. To start this unit the students explored ice and tested the properties of different materials. Next week, they will begin to look at the different states of matter and we will be looking at the changes of states.

In maths, the students have looked at factors and multiples and next week will be moving on to multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, and 1000.
