Newsletter Term 3 Week 10

Posted in - Uncategorized

Dear Parents, Students and Staff,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter. Parents of our F2 children enjoyed a very happy and emotional graduation ceremony on Wednesday. As Ms. De Klerk said on the afternoon, the children have grown in every way since the start of the academic year and they are ready for commencement to Year One. With balloons, video interviews and final hat toss, it was a lovely afternoon, and thank you to Ms. De Klerk, Ms. Dingli, Mr. Green and our parents who helped make this event so memorable.

Awards Assembly

We had a very full, and enjoyable, whole school assembly on Thursday, and it was great to see the range of achievements gained by our students, from athletics to academics to attendance!

As a faculty we are rightly proud of the efforts made by all students, and it is also right that some individuals are recognised for particularly epitomising the HFS core values. The following students have received commendations for this term: –

Mr. McCrimmon – Leila Cerise De Los Reyes
Ms. Zorina – Margarita Florovskiy
Ms. Fuller – Dhanya Sri Kotikalapudi
Mrs. Munden – Zarin MaisarahYusmi
Mr. Fairclough – Aimin Simandjoentak
Ms. Strang – Akshitha Chenna
Mr. Munden – Qistina Alya Arulhaizal

The Outstanding Achievement Award for 2016 / 2017 was presented to Ece Ungor. The loud and extended applause Ece received from faculty,  students and parents, reflects the amazing and varied contribution she has made to HFS in such a relatively short time – well done Ece!

End of Year reports

All students will receive their end of year reports today. Please see the following information regarding some of the reports contents

  • Attendance was calculated for this term only, as previous reports also recorded attendance. The figure records attendance up to and including Friday 16th June. One school day is calculated as two attendances.
  • Please note that any assessment result should be placed within a context of being a ‘snapshot’ of a student’s attainment, at the time of that assessment. A broader measure of a student’s attainment and progress this term is provided by the comments in the end of year report. That being so, assessment grades do provide a useful tool for comparing a student’s attainment against age-related expectations  – Cambridge Progress Checks (Years 3, 4 and 5), and how any one student is performing in relation to other students of the same age, following the same Cambridge programme – Cambridge Checkpoint assessments (Year 6 and 9).
  • Cambridge Progress Checks grades
  • Bronze – Working towards the standard. Learners have a basic grasp of the curriculum content. They have achieved a few of the learning objectives and are working toward achieving others. They would benefit from more focus on some areas of the curriculum.
  • Silver – Meeting the standard. Learners have a sound grasp of the curriculum content. They are successfully achieving many of the learning objectives as expected at this stage.
  • Gold – Exceeding the standard. Learners have an excellent grasp of the curriculum content. They are successfully achieving the great majority of the learning objectives and often go beyond what is expected at this stage.
  • Cambridge Progress Check is scored as follows: –

Parent Volunteer Luncheon
Thank you to those parents who attended the luncheon earlier this week. As I said at the time, many of the events held this year would not be possible at HFS without the support of our parents and families. We offer sincere thanks to all those who have helped in any way to make this a very successful year.

Parent / Teacher Conferences Wednesday 28th June

Please be reminded that all students should attend with parents if possible. Please return reply slips as soon as possible as confirmation of attending the meeting with the class teacher.

Newsletter Term 3 Week 9

Posted in - Latest News

Dear Parents, Students and Staff,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter. HFS students, parents and staff enjoyed a wonderful Sports Day this week. The glorious weather was matched by the performances on the field and track, with students benefiting from the enthusiastic support from the many parents in attendance. The competition was intense but always fair, with Team Otters lifting the HFS Sports Day trophy for 2017, closely followed by Teams Hedgehog and Pheasant.

I have been fortunate to attend many sports meetings, and this latest HFS Sports Day was notable for its wonderful atmosphere of competitive fairness, its fun and its excellent organisation. Thank you to Mr. Moss for all his hard work in preparing the students, and for organising the meeting logistics, and thank you also to the administrative office and Mr. Song in helping to prepare the sports field. Further thanks are also due to our PTA and parents for their unwavering enthusiasm and support, and for the end-of-meeting ice blocks! Finally, my sincere thanks to all who had any part in making this such a brilliant occasion.

Photographs of the HFS Sports Day 2017 will be uploaded to our  Facebook page shortly.

Clubhouse arrangements

Although we are rapidly approaching the end of the school year, following some recent confusion regarding students using the Clubhouse restaurant facilities, here is a reminder of the current HFS practices: –

  • Students eating lunch at the Clubhouse must be accompanied by an adult, and this adult should collect the students from school and sign them out.
  • Only students in Years 5 to 9 can order lunch from the Clubhouse. These orders are managed by students from Mr. Munden’s class. Students in Y5 – 9 cannot order food for siblings.

Healthy eating at HFS

A gentle reminder that students should not be provided with ‘fast’ foods (McDonald’s, Subway etc) for lunch or snack.

Thank you for your help with these matters

Parent / Teacher Conferences Wednesday 28th June

The appointment letters for this term’s parent / teacher conferences will be sent home today, with the oldest sibling, if there is more than one child attending HFS. Please check the school bag for the letter, complete the reply slip and return to your child’s class teacher as soon as possible.

As these meetings are intended to be student-led, it is requested that all children accompany parents or guardians to these meetings.

Awards Assembly – Thursday 22nd June 11 a.m.

Please note the time of our final assembly of the year is 11 a.m. to enable our Early Years children to be present. All parents and family are welcome to the awarding of many prizes including final commendations, athletics ribbons, attendance prizes and leaving certificates. The assembly will take place in the gymnasium as usual.

HFS Sports Day – Thursday 15th June, Spanish Fields

Start Time: 9:30 am     Finish Time: 12:30 pm
Where: Spanish Fields, Dong-Gu, Ulsan

Dear Parents,

On Thursday15th June F1-Y9 students will take part in the annual Sports Day to be held at the Spanish Fields.  Students will be in mixed age teams, and will participate in several athletic activities throughout the morning, collecting valuable points in an attempt to be part of the winning team. All teams have been given the name of an animal to create even more excitement! There will also be Year group sprint races, plus tug of war competitions to add spice to the day. Participation, fun, and healthy competition are the aims for the day so please come along and support your child.

It would be appreciated if your child could come to school in their PE uniform and sports shoes. Please also ensure that your child puts sunscreen on before coming to school, and that they bring a hat, at least one filled water bottle, gloves for the tug of war event, plus a nutritious snack. All students (including EYC) should arrive at main school by 8.45 a.m. and will register in their classrooms as normal. EYC staff will meet their students in the front of school and then escort them to the cafeteria.

Students will travel to / from Spanish Fields by bus (please see * note below).
As part of the fun-filled morning, a special parent / teacher tug of war event will be held, so please come along prepared with sports shoes!

*Please note that Thursday 15th is a half day, as has been previously advertised, and there will be no afternoon classes. You may therefore collect your child once they return by bus from Spanish Fields (no later than 1 p.m.).

We look forward to your support on Thursday 15th June.

Yours Sincerely,
Mr. Richard Moss
PE Teacher

Sun Safety at HFS – a reminder

A gentle reminder about students wearing hats as a matter of sun protection. My thanks to parents of our younger students as most of these now regularly wear hats outside. I ask parents of our older students, particularly Year 5 and upwards, to encourage some awareness of, and responsibility for, healthy lifestyle choices, and remind these students to wear a hat.

Mathletics and Reading Eggs websites

Many of our students enjoy using these school-linked websites at home in addition to their use at school. HFS is currently renewing its membership for the coming year, and adjusting our students lists. There may be some disruption in the availability of these websites, but we hope this will be resolved very soon. My apologies for any recent problems gaining access to these sites.

Late lunch or snack delivery

Parents should deliver snacks or lunches direct to the school office and not to the classroom to avoid disrupting lessons. Thank you for your help with this matter.

More from our very own Steven Spielberg, Mr. Fairclough, below: –

Thank you to all for making the showing of our film a night to remember.

You are very welcome to copy and share with family and friends but please do not put the film, or clips of the film, on social media sites.

Thank you,

Mr. Fairclough
