I hope everyone their long weekend and made the most of time off together. Despite the slightly shorter week due to Seollal we still managed to fit so much in. We also had a special visited, Jinmyeong a former student of HFS came to visit us on Tuesday, it was great to have her back and she was a great help. Next week, the class will be doing practice exams to help ready the Year 6 and 9 students for the Cambridge Checkpoint exams for English, Maths, and Science.
We are coming to the end of our first IPC unit, the final areas we looked at where how to separate mixtures and the students baked cookies and looked at the science involved in this.
Next week the students will be moving on to a new Topic called Existing, Endangered, Extinct? Where the students will look at identifying and classifying animals as well as food webs and food chains.
We are also coming to the end of our fiction unit on writing suspense stories and next week the student will write a final story independently, after that we will move on to our non-fiction unit.
That’s all for today, have a great weekend everyone.
A slightly shorter week at HFS as we finish early for Seollal (Korean New Year), for this as a school we came together to celebrate this holiday on Tuesday. The students had a lot of fun creating a collage, making a wish to hang on the tree, helping with the assembly and playing traditional Korean games.
The Science experiments continue this week as the students investigate electrical conductors and insulators and we also made bath bombs and tested to see what effect the temperature of the water would have on the bath bombs.
In maths, this week the class has moved on to angles the students went back over the different types of angels and worked on estimating and measuring angles using a protractor.
In English, the students have started to write their suspense stories and I have been impressed with them so far, they have really used a lot of the language features that we studied this term.
Another week has flown as we begin to delve deeper into our Topics for this term. This week the students have spent some of their time preparing for their assembly, which will take place on Monday and also getting ready for the Seollal school celebrations, which will take place on Tuesday. The highlight of this week was, of course, Silly Hat day. I was very happy to see the entire class participate in this and every hat looked amazing, well done to Aki, who was voted the winner of the best hat.
In science this week, the student looked at the properties of different materials. In pairs, they tested the hardness, flexibility, permeability, whether it is magnetic or not, and whether it was transparent or not. They also looked at reversible and irreversible changes, identified these and explained how the reversible changed can turn back and what the identified the reactant and product of irreversible changes.
This term in PE the students have started learning basketball, this week they have worked on passing, defensive skills, and dribbling. Later, the students will work on shooting and game situations.
In English, we have continued our work around suspense, the students have worked on writing short paragraphs that include the features of suspense writing as well as learning about show don’t tell. They have also completed a plan to help them write their own suspense stories that they will start writing next week.
That’s all for this week, have a great weekend everyone.
Welcome back everyone, I hope we all had a good Christmas and Happy New Year. The year 5-9 jumped straight into our new topics for each subject and there have been lots of fun learning experiences. Firstly, I would like to welcome two new students to our class, Lina and Kristian Larsen from Norway, they have both made a great started and have settled in really well.
Our new IPC topic is called Making New Materials, which has a Science focus and looks into materials that can be shaped, combined, condensed, frozen, melted and burned. In this unit, we are going to experiment with different kinds of materials and become cooks, chemists, and creators of new materials. To start this off we carried out two investigations this week: the first was an investigation into what would happen when you mix solids with liquids, our second investigation looked into how to keep things cool.
In English, the class has started to look at suspense writing and how to create this, so far we have looked at varied sentence length, figurative language and varied sentence openers to help us create suspense.
In Maths, the class has started this term by looking at area and perimeter, the students learnt how to find the area and perimeter of rectangles and next week will move onto more complex shapes.
It has been great to be back at HFS and have all students working hard and making a good start to the term. I hope everyone has a great weekend, see you all on Monday.
