Greetings from Mr. Dunn!
We have reached the halfway point of this term and as ever the week has been incredibly busy. Most of this week London class have been very creative working on a number of big projects.
The first project that we started this week was in history on the underground railroad a secret organisation set up to helps slaves escape to freedom. The project had to include: What the underground railroad is, key people, how it worked, codes and there must be a 3D element as well. The students are close to finishing and I hope they will be able to show these off to the rest of the school in the first assembly back after the week break.
Our other creative project was to get ready for the Scary Dress Up Day, the students had to make an escape room with lots of puzzles to solve, task to complete and help decorate the classroom.
Scray Dress Up Day was a lot of fun, all the children and staff dressed up in wonderfully scary costumes. In the afternoon we had some scary themed activities, an escape room, chose your own adventure games and scary games played in the hall.
Please find attached the spelling bee words for the competition that will take place after the holiday, the students will need to learn the words from the first three columns. The first competition will be a class competition and the winners from this will go into a Spelling Bee evening competition that will take place on the 13th November.
Enjoy your break and see you all soon! Study List Level 3
Good afternoon, we were back to a full week of school at HFS and there has been so much going on in London class. We have just one more week to go before the half-term break, this term is just flying by.
This week, the students have been working on explanation texts in English. The students have looked at different examples of explanations texts to help them identify the structure and features, they have also practice writing introductions and conclusions. Today, the students start to plan their own explanation texts, to do this they designed their own inventions so they can explain how it works.
In history, this week the children looked at slave abolition. In the first lesson, the students looked at arguments for and against the abolition of slavery and then created an anti-slavery poster. In the second lesson, the students looked at key abolitionists and the impact they had.
To end the week the students had a Spelling Bee competition, this was a practice for an actual competition that will take place on November 13th at HFS.
For the competition, the students need to orally spell words with no mistakes, they could ask for a definition of the word and for the word to be used in a sentence if they were unsure.
Another short week at HFS as Hanguel day was celebrated on Wednesday, the rest of the week was filled with lots of learning and fun experiences. There are only two weeks left until half term and there is still so much to fit in.
In Science, this week the students conducted their first experiment of the year. As a class, we dropped parachutes out of the cafeteria window and timed how long it took to reach the ground, to see which parachute was the best. This was a lot of fun and we even need to call Mr. Choi to help us as some parachutes got stuck. After that, the students came back to the classroom to write up their investigation.
We have started a new unit in PE, the students are now working on net games so we have now started playing badminton. To start this unit students worked on their own at first to see how many times they could keep the shuttlecock in the air. Next, the student moved into pairs to see if they could get a rally going.
In English, the students have finished writing their stories and we will move onto nonfiction writing next week. The students will be writing explanation texts, they will need to understand the structure and features of this type of text so they can write it successfully.
That’s all for this week, have a great weekend.
A slightly shorter week as the school closed for Korean Foundation Day on Thursday, but we still managed to fit so much in. On Friday, we were lucky enough to be visited by Jinmyeong a former student of HFS, she joined us for the day as her school was closed for the day.
We continued our work on Forces in Science, this week we spent time making parachutes ready to conduct an experiment on air resistance next week. The students were split into groups and made three parachutes of varying sizes, each group also made the parachutes in different shapes so we can see which type of parachute is the best.
In Geography, each group presented their presentations on a particular climate zone. It was great to see the students speak in front of their peers and present the research they had carried out.
We had our last lesson in PE on tag football, the students were able to play a full game of tag football to wrap the unit up. Next week we will hopefully move on to net games.
Have a great weekend!
