Term 2 Week 1 Update

Hello everyone!

Welcome back, I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break. This week, the students have worked well online, but I am looking forward to having them back in class from next Monday. We also welcomed Nathan, to the class as a few children moved classes to aid and benefit them.

The class started new topics for each subject, for IMYC the students will look at a unit called ‘Discovery’. As an entry point for this the I sent home an excavation kit, where they could discover what lay inside.

After the entry point, the students researched a famous explore from the Age of Discoveries in History and created a timeline of scientific discoveries in Science.

In English, we started a Nonfiction unit and the students looked at the features of blog writing before creating their own blog post.

Final Update for Term 1

Hello everyone!

Firstly I’d like to say well done to the Year 6-9 class for having adapted so well to online learning and their continued hard work. It was a shame we couldn’t spend this last week together, but we still had lots of fun this week.

This week, the students created book covers for the stories they wrote in class as well as making a movie trailer to go as well.

In History, after making castles in class and then at home, the students then learnt about siege warfare and how to attack a castle. The students made a presentation about what siege warfare is and the different tactics used and then made their own catapult.

Week 16 Update

Sadly, the term is ending with the School going online for the last week before the winter break. This means that the Winter Show will be postponed. In a bid to try and end the term with some fun, the Christmas party will be done online on Friday!

This week the students learned about different castles during Medieval England, we looked at the strengths and weaknesses of Motte an Bailey castles and Stone castles. After, that the students made their own castles and would write a presuasive presentation to convince Lords to build a their castle.

This term, the students have been playing basketball with myself and Ms. Sim (on Tuesday). This week, we played a full match, with some rule changes so the students could demonstrate the skills they have been practicing.

Week 15 Update

Hello everyone!

Only two weeks until the end of the first term and what a busy term it has been. The school is looking very festive now as Christmas trees and decorations are now up!

This week, the students explored the Feudal system in History, we role played what it would be like for each group of people using M&Ms to represent taxes. Hannah was the peasants, Dave the Knights, Jeongwoo the Barons and of course I was the King!

In science, the students looked at Cell division, the leanrt how and this happens, then created a model showing each stage of mitosis.

In English, the students are almost at the end of their creative narratives and in maths, we are looking at converting different units of measure.

Week 14 Update

Four weeks to go until the end of term, school is starting to get super busy as students practice for the Winter Show and we begin to come to the end of our final units for the term.

A science-heavy week for our IMYC unit, students made a cell model to show the different parts and made a poster showing the links between cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and organisms.

In English, the students planned and started to type up a story, this will continue into next week, later the students will edit these. Jeongwoo and Dave rolled a dice to see what genre, setting, and type of character they need to write about.

Week 13 Update

A very hectic week for the HFS community as CIS visited our school, viewed teaching and learning, and meet with staff, students, and parents. I hope the students enjoyed their extra day off.

In maths, this week, we moved to area and perimeter. The students found the area and perimeter of different objects in the classroom as well as parts of the school.

In Science, the students created their own onion slides to observe under a microscope then draw a diagram of what they could see. The students now understand the different parts of plant and animal cells and will be making a model with labels to show the different parts.

In History we continued to explore the England in the Middle Ages, we looked at the Battle of Stamford Bridge and the Battle of Hastings and how these lead to William the Conqueror taking control of England.

Week 12 Update

Hello everyone!

Another week full of learning and exploration as we really kick on with our new units which will see us through to the end of this term.

In History, the students started to look at England in the Middle Ages and what life was like. The students went on a museum walk and answered questions to gain an understanding of this period. After that, they compared this to life in the Middle Ages to life in England now. Next, the students looked at claimants to the throne of England and each of their strengths and weakness. This will lead us to explore a great change for England, which will impact how society is structured.

In Geography, the students looked at how towns and cities are structured. First, the students looked at pictures of the local area and sorted these images into different groups. They then designed their own city and explained why they structured their city the way they did.

In English, we started our new unit called ‘Writing Skills’, the students looked at a variety of skills and techniques that will help them write a creative narrative. The students used the five senses to create a setting description, we went outside to help us with this. We also worked on different types of figurative language and dialogue to help create tension and suspense. Next week, we will look at character descriptions as well as ways to hook the reader.

Week 11 Update

Another fun and exciting week of learning comes to an end in Year 6-9,we have just started our new IMYC unit ‘Structures’.

In Geography, we explored our local area, seeing what building there are and why the area is structured the way it is. When then went back to the classroom to look at a map and answer questions.

In Science, each student got a microscope to experiment with and view pre made slides of various of insects, plants and animals. After that, the students created a guide to explain how to use a microscope. Next week we will create our own microscope sample slides.

Week 10 Update

Hello everyone!

A super busy week ended with some scary fun! I hope the students didn’t eat too much candy!

In maths, we moved on to adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. The class played some games to help reinforce their learning.

This week we completed our unit on ‘Adaptability’ so we ended this with our Exit Point lesson were the students reflect on their learning and the Big Idea they used animaker to make an animated presentation. We also started our new IMYC unit ‘Structures’ with an Entry Point, the students used Lego to create their own structure.

We ended this week with Scary Dress-up Day, Jeongwoo won best costume in the class. We also had a visit from former student Leigh-ah it was nice for the students to catch up with her.

Week 9 Update

Hello everyone.

A super busy week in the Year 6-9 class, here is what we have been up to.

We are coming to the end of our IMYC Unit ‘Adaptability’ and next week, the class we be starting their new IMYC Unit called ‘Structures’. In Science the students looked at endangered and extinct animals and how this links to animal’s adaptations. The students used tablets to scan QR codes to find out information. In Geography, the students looked at the people of the Amazon and how they use their surroundings to help them survive.

In English, the classroom was turned into a dystopian setting with propaganda posters, video, sounds, images, and wire fencing to help the, create a dystopian setting description.
