Good afternoon everyone,
I hope you have all had a great week. In Year 1/2, we have been finishing our IPC topic about buildings. In Literacy, we wrote non-chronological reports about different buildings and structures around the world. Using the information that we gathered about non-chronological reports last week, we planned our reports using different paragraphs and sub-headings. We then used our laptops to research information about our topic and add it to our plan. After we had planned our reports, we wrote them and added diagrams and colour to make our work more eye-catching.
In our IPC work, we have been learning about buildings from the past. We learned about traditional houses in Britain from different time periods, including medieval, tudor and Georgian and ordered these on a timeline. I then asked the children to find out about traditional buildings from their own home countries and compare these to the homes people live in today.
As our exit point for this unit, we made a ‘world village’ using the different houses and structures that the children have made throughout our topic. The children decided to have grass on one side of the road for the houses in warm climates and the snow on the other side of the road for the houses in cold climates. They then added people and cars to our village.
On Monday, Year 1/2 will be doing doing an assembly on creativity and will be sharing some of the work they have been creating in class. They have also worked as a team to create a PowerPoint presentation for our assembly. As part of this, children have learned how to make a PowerPoint slide, add and change the text and copy and paste images from Google. Please come along to see some of the work they have been creating.
In maths this week, we learned how to make a Carroll diagram by sorting information using 2 different criteria. The children chose different ways to sort shapes and label them on a diagram. We then learned how to solve problems involving data. The children enjoyed playing ‘Teddy Town’ which involved lots of problem solving skills to work out which street the different coloured houses could go on and which houses each bear lived in.

Good afternoon! I hope you are all enjoying the nice weather that we have had over the last couple of days.
This week was a little bit sad in Year 1/2 as we said goodbye to Gabriel on Wednesday. We are very sad to see him go but we wish him the best of luck in the future. Goodbye Gabriel!
In class this week, we have started lots of new learning. In Literacy, we have been learning about dictionary skills. We started the week by learning about what dictionaries are and how we can use them. We used the dictionaries to find and write the definitions of some of our topic words. We then learned about non-chronological reports. We started by reading non-chronological reports and discussing and labelling the features. We then read and answered questions about them by finding information in the text.
In maths, we have been learning about data. We started by collecting data. We visited each of the different classes in school and asked everybody what their favourite colour was. We used the information to make a tally chart and then found out what the most popular favourite colour in school was. (It was pink!)
After this, we used the information that we had collected to make a bar chart.
We then learned how to make a venn diagram by sorting information by two different criteria.
Following on from our topic work about buildings, we talked about different structures in our environment. We looked at some pictures of some of the most famous structures around the world and discussed what was similar about them. (They were all very big.)
We then discussed how we can make strong structures like the ones we had seen. Each day, the children were given a different challenge to build a structure that was strong. They began by trying to build tall structures using newspaper and tape. The next day, they were given the challenge to build a bridge between two chairs that would hold the weight of a toy car. After each challenge, the children talked about what was tricky and what they would do differently next time. The whole class worked really well as a team, sharing their ideas and working together to try to solve problems they encountered.
We then found out about different types of bridges around the world and how they are designed to be strong. After this, the children were given the opportunity to make a plan and then build their bridge again using the different techniques we had discussed.

I hope you have all had a great week. As you know, today we had Pyjama Day to help raise money to help towards the Australian wildfires. Thank you for all of your effort and contributions. As a special treat, the children watched a short movie and had popcorn at the end of the day.
In class this week, Year 1/2 have been learning about division. We learned how to divide a total by sharing into equal groups or grouping and counting in steps of 2, 3, 5 and 10. We then solved problems involving division.
In Literacy, we finished retelling the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We then read the story of ‘Leola and the Honey Bears’ which is an African-American retelling of the story using different characters and slightly different events. We then wrote a book review to compare the stories and talk about what we liked and disliked. Our spelling focus this week was words containing ir, er and ur.
In IPC this week, we have been learning about different homes around the world. We used pictures and books to research different types of homes and then locate them on a world map. We then compared the climate in different countries and discussed different types of materials that would be used to build homes there and why they would be suitable. We created our own apartments and houses using clay and then made other homes from around the world using different materials.
With coronavirus in mind, we decided to learn about how germs spread. To demonstrate this, we put some glitter (germs) on our hands and watched what happened when we rubbed our hands together or held our friends hand and the glitter spread. We then talked about how we keep stop germs from spreading by covering our mouth when we cough or sneeze and washing our hands regularly. The children then wrote some instructions for how to wash your hands and we laminated their work to put up around the school next to the sinks.
