This week, we studied American artist Georgia O’Keeffe. Georgia O’Keeffe is famous for painting flowers. She was famous for finding her inspiration in nature. The flower objectifications she created throughout her career is her best-known works. The Y1-2 children understood Georgia’s life and tried to draw Georgia O’Keeffe’s art piece. To create a blending effect, we used pastels and the children’s work will be completed next week.
Following last week, this week, we learned about ‘the Four Gentlemen’ drawn by Korean painters. Each of the paintings tell which of ‘the Four Gentlemen’ is represented by starting the season and naming symbol. Also, the kids learned about great artists were also great poets. The poems on the painting express the painter’s ideas. and emotions, and also provide decorative beauty to the painting. Each of the children tried to express the four gentlemen they wanted to draw. It was hard to believe that it was the first time, so wonderful works came out. Everyone did a great job!
We learned about Viva la Vida, Watermelons which is the last painting that Frida Kahlo did. A vibrant conclusion to the short life of Frida Kahlo, Viva la Vida, Watermelons features rich color contrasts, curves and angles, and a final message from the artist herself. Kahlo put the finishing touches on her watermelon-themed painting just a few days before her death in 1954. The Y6-9 students started to observe to sketch and colour it.
This week we made summer necklaces and fans while recalling the images of sea animals and creatures we learned last term. After attaching shells, seahorses, starfish, and fish to the blue clay, reminiscent of the sea, beautiful necklaced were made by attaching a string. In the remaining time, children chose silhouettes of sea animals, drew their own patterns and colored them. It was such a fun activity! As the theme of this term is summer, we will be doing lots more fun activities.
We explored the idea that plants and flowers are living things, which need air, water and sunlight to grow. We watched a clip on how the plants grow and then die. We created a poster, of the plant cycle.
This term we will know learn about number of artists – including some from their home country and our host country.
We would like to take the time to introduce famous Korean artists since we are living in Korea.
In the first class this week, we learned about traditional Korean calligraphy, Korean painting, and folk painting. We began to understand the appearance of traditional brushes and differences from Western brushes.
Because oriental brushes are difficult to use, the children started with drawing basic lines using a brush pen. They wrote consonants and vowels, and looked at the sample letters and tried writing ‘Good Day’.
It was a great challenge and everyone produced some wonderful calligraphy work.
In the next lesson, we will learn how to write calligraphy sentences and how to draw the traditional “Four gentlemen”. Everyone did a great job!
Y6-9 is completed the portrait of Frida Kahlo. Next week, we will learn about Frida Kahlo’s last piece of work, ‘Watermelon,’ and explain why Mexicans love watermelon, using her techniques.
We continued to colour and decorate our rainbow fish.
We added to our creation on some fish friends and seaweed using different types of paper for our rainbow fish. It was so fun to tear the papers with our hands and get unexpected shape.
I think the rainbow fish is not lonely anymore because we made some friends for him.
Will you come to visit our beautiful ocean? 😊
You’re welcomed anytime and we can be your friend.
