Dear Parents,

I would like to say thank you to the parent community for coming out and joining the children in their Chuseok celebration at school. As you may be aware, Chuseok is a traditional Korean holiday during which people visit their ancestral homes and pay respect to their parents and relatives both living and deceased. To put it another way, it is basically an occasion for people to celebrate their togetherness as a community and express their gratitude to those whom they hold dear. In that respect, we can be together in our hearts on this occasion regardless of our nationality and beliefs and say thank you to each other for what we owe to each other as a member of this global community.

I hope you all have wonderful Chuseok holidays and return to school safely on 10th October.  Before I sign off, I would like to give you a reminder that the Year 1/2 class will be split into the Year 1 class taught by Ms. Sena You and the Year 1/2 class taught by Mr. Scott Kearney when the students return from holidays.

Happy Chuseok.

Warm regards,

Dear HFS Parents,

We are chugging along into the final week of the first month of the new academic year and the students are coming to school full of hopes and aspirations thanks to your active support and interest in the school. Our Y3-9 students have had an enjoyable day of great outdoor activities in connection with the Ulju Mountain Film Festival Trip (Please see the attached photos) and tomorrow some of our students will have fun watching and representing our school as escorts at a K-League soccer match at the Munsu World Cup Stadium. With the Chuseok holidays just around the corner, I am happy to make announcements and reminders for our parent community for the following weeks.

Chuseok Holiday Events, the Week of 25th September

The school will organize many colorful and fun activities throughout the next week to help the students to experience authentic Korean culture in anticipation of the Chuseok holidays the week after next.

On Monday the 25th September, a group of Korean musicians will come to the school and perform traditional musical instruments and traditional dance in the school hall from 13:30 – 14:30.  The students will then have a chance to play the instruments themselves. Parents are invited to witness the performance.

On Tuesday, the 26th September, Ms. Yuli, the HFS Art teacher, will be making a Korean art presentation and there will be calligraphy performances from 13:30 – 14:30.

Finally, on Friday the 29th September, the Year 7-9 students will make a presentation on Korean culture in the hall followed by a group dance called “Gang-gang-su-lae” in the school playground and this will be followed by group games. Ms. Yuli is going to create photo frames during that time and again parents are invited to come in and take photos with the students. Students will also be able to sample Korean rice cakes called “Songpyeon.”  This event will start just after lunch and parents are invited to come out and join us during this interesting afternoon of Korean cultural events.

GL Assessment Progress Tests Throughout Next Week

As informed previously, HFS students from Year 1–9 will sit GL Assessments throughout next week. Please check the class pages for the test schedules and information.

Mr. Scott Kearney Joins Us on Next Tuesday, 26th September

Mr. Scott Kearney will be joining us from next Tuesday. He will be teaching the students in the Year 1/2 combined class throughout next week and after Chuseok Holidays he will be responsible for the Year 1/2 class, while Ms. Sena You will take charge of the Y1 class. Welcome back, Mr. Kearney!

Curriculum Evening – Tuesday 12th September

The school had a successful Curriculum Evening on Tuesday 12th September. I would like to thank those parents who took the time to meet with myself and our faculty members on this occasion. During the session I took the opportunity to explain to the parents about the current status and the future of the school including;

  • its planned relocation to a temporary site after the current academic year;
  • its move to a permanent site in about three years’ time;
  • the ongoing efforts of the school to recruit a new principal; and
  • the splitting of the Y1/2 class into separate classes after the Chuseok Holidays.

For those parents who were unable to attend the evening, I invite them to refer to the slides that I have uploaded on the school website. Should you require any further clarification please do not hesitate to approach me.

The Year 2 students took the GL Assessment Progress Tests in English and Maths yesterday and today. The Year 1 students will be sitting the tests next week and the Year 3 to Year 9 students will be sitting the tests in Week 5. As we have mentioned before, these tests have been newly introduced for this academic year and hopefully will help us to better monitor the progress each student makes and guide their growth. Dear HFS Parents,

 I hope this message finds you and your family well.

 After we entered September, the air seems crisper and it feels more comfortable walking or jogging around. We are at the threshold of the great season of the year that both outdoors people and those who would prefer turning the pages at home would welcome wholeheartedly. What’s best is that the weather is becoming nicer for our students to learn in their classrooms and play on the school ground.

 The following are a mix of reminders and notices for you to be aware of.

Lifting of the Seafood Ban

Now that we haven’t received any objection from the parent community as to the lifting of the seafood ban after the announcement, we will implement the altered food policy from next Monday.  I am sure that many students will be able to enjoy nutritious seafood for their lunch and their parents will have more leeway in preparing their children’s lunch boxes.

Korean Professional Soccer League Match on Saturday, September 23

HFS would like to invite our students to watch a K-League (Korean Professional Soccer League) match which will be held at the Munsu World Cup Stadium on Saturday, September 23, 2017. The match will be between Ulsan Hyundai FC and Jeonnam Dragons FC starting at 6 p.m.

HFS has secured 50 seats for any interested students and their families to watch the match. The Ulsan Hyundai FC has arranged two buses that will taxi students and their families to and from the event.

Newsletter 2017/18 Term 1 Week 1

Posted in - Latest News

Dear HFS Parents,

 Greetings to you all. I am writing the newsletter on behalf of the school and will be doing so until a new principal comes.

 We have begun our journey for the 2017/2018 academic year and thanks to our teachers’ hard work and your support, we are progressing well. I am sure we will complete this journey successfully with your continued support for the school.

 In this letter, I would like to draw your attention to the events and programs that we plan to organize for the next couple of weeks.

Lifting of the Sea Food Ban

 We believe it is now time to alter our school policy on food allergy. Everybody would be well aware of the importance of a balanced diet and that sea food is a rich source of a wide variety of nutrients. However, till the end of the last academic year, the school had enforced a sea food ban in order to protect a student with a life-threatening sea food allergy. We no longer seem to have any students at our school with such an allergy and we are therefore considering lifting the ban. Prior to doing that, the school intends to check and make sure that we do not have students with serious sea food allergy. Please inform the school office by the end of next week if your child does suffer from such an allergy. When we are sure that we have no students with such a condition, we will immediately lift the ban.

Taking of Class Photos on September 11 (Uniform Required)

 We will be taking class photos on Monday, September 11. By this time we expect all students to have a set of the school uniform. Please make sure that your child(ren) comes to school on that day in the school uniform or brings one with them. Class teachers will let the students know which colour to wear. This information will also be made available on their class pages closer to the time.

Curriculum Evening on September 12 at 17:30

 We plan to have a Curriculum Evening on Tuesday, September 12 at 17:30. Parents will have the opportunity to attend a presentation by their child(rens) class teachers for 15 minutes on the curriculum used in the class, homework expectations and any programmes that will be used with the students. To make the best of this occasion, I will start the evening with a brief presentation about the school’s current status and its future in order to put to rest any parents’ concerns about the school. I would like to invite you to come to the Hall first and after the meeting with me, you can meet your own teacher in his/her classroom.

Term 1 Calendar

 We are currently in the process of finalizing our Term 1 calendar. Once this has been completed, we will post it on the school website.

Changed Address and Contact Details

 We need to make sure that we have the most up-to-date personal information of all the students in our file. If your address or contact details have changed over the last academic year (This doesn’t concern newcomers), please click on the link http://www.hyundaiforeignschool.com/_/hfs-contact-form/ and fill in the revised details on the contact form at your earliest convenience.

Reminder to Check the Class Page

Lastly, I would like to remind you to please check your child(ren)’s class page regularly because vital, class-specific information will be made available there.

Thank you for your time and I wish you and your family a wonderful weekend and the best of health and happiness until I meet you again through the newsletter next week.

Warm regards,
