Newsletter Term 3 Week 6

Posted in - Newsletter

Dear Parents, Students and Staff,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter. The air has been full of signs and symbols today as HFS enjoyed ‘Maths Day’ across the school. From ensuring the fox does not eat the chicken as they cross the river, to a murder mystery investigation, all our students have been enjoying a fun, and even exciting, day of mathematical activities. Please check our Facebook page for the latest photographs of today’s activities.

Hyundai Foreign School

HFS recently concluded a series of information sessions for both new and current parents. These sessions detailed the rigorous academic programme that will be followed in the coming years, and the school’s financial health, both in terms of its standing as an independent faculty, and its ongoing relationship with HHI. Please see the following message from Mr. Paul Kim, Executive Board member, that underlines the commitment of HHI to maintaining strong support for HFS.

Dear Parents,
HFS would like to reassure the parent community that HHI is appreciative and supportive of the important role that HFS has been playing in successfully meeting the educational needs of the children of its clients and those of the general community in Ulsan.
HHI is currently providing the following financial support for HFS and will continue to do so in the future with a firm commitment: –

  • To provide the school buildings and the school site for the school
  • To maintain capital investment to ensure proper maintenance and upkeep of the school facilities
  • To support the school in maintaining financial viability

Please rest assured that HFS stands on a secure financial foundation and will remain so in the future.  In this regard, we would sincerely appreciate it if you could put your unwavering trust and faith in HFS as a long-standing educational institution providing an English-based international education for the community in Ulsan.
Mr. Paul Kim
Executive Board Member

At HFS we do understand that these can be uncertain and unfamiliar times for our families, certainly in comparison with the recent history of HHI. However, if any families have any questions at all, please do contact myself directly, or the school administrative office, for the most recent, and accurate, information.

Movie Premier Night at HFS

The Return of the Return of Mr. Nasty

Mr. Nasty – the world’s most dangerous man – has escaped from Alcatraz and is hiding a nuclear bomb in a school in Korea. The British and Korean intelligence agree to send their best agents to find him.
Can they do so before he detonates the bomb with the red bit?
Will Miss Mayhem make it back from the hairdresser on time?
Will Thor get a conscience and fight for good, not evil?
Are you wondering what on Earth I am talking about??
Then come along and see for yourself:
HFS HALL  7:15 pm on Thursday, June 1st.
Actors will meet and greet the audience at 6.30 p.m.

Please note the film does not contain shocks or horror but there are (short and exaggerated) fist fight scenes so parental guidance is advised.

HFS Sports Day – Please see below for important information regarding the collection of students after the event

A gentle reminder of the changes to our school programme for HFS Sports’ Day. All children will go home after the sports’ meeting from the HFS site, at no later that 1 p.m. This will allow some recovery time for our students, and our staff! To compensate for this, Wednesday 14th June will be a full school day, and follow the regular Thursday timetable and curriculum. Please see below: –

To ensure the safety of our students, and for ease of organisation, parents must collect students ONLY FROM HFS after the conclusion of the event. No students are to be collected directly from Spanish Fields. All students will return to school.

  • Wednesday 14th June – school hours 8.55 a.m. to 3.15 p.m.
  • Thursday 15th June – school hours 8.55 a.m. to 1 p.m. (latest)
Rising Stars soccer school will still be at the usual time on Thursday afternoon.

Parent volunteers for Sports Day

The class teachers have already appealed on behalf of Mr. Moss for the help of our class parents for Sports Day. I am very grateful to these parents, and any others, who wish to support the HFS staff during this activity. If you can volunteer, please contact Mr. Moss, or PTA (pta@hyundaiforeignschool.com)

Sun safety at HFS

It has been pleasing to see the number of children wearing hats recently, and teachers have also been reminding our students of the importance of sun safety. However, there is still a significant proportion of children, of all ages, without any hats. Please support the school in encouraging our students to develop a sense of responsibility for the own well being by ensuring all children come to school with a hat. This does not need to be a school cap, but these are available to purchase, in a wide range of sizes, from the school administrative office.

Health and Safety

There has been an increase in the number of students complaining of upset stomachs recently. Class teachers have reminded the students about the importance of hand washing routines. Please also consider the composition of student lunches now that the warmer weather is here. Unfortunately, we are not able to refrigerate any food at HFS, so please ensure lunches are not liable to spoil in the hot weather.

End of Year gift giving

The school faculty recognises and very much appreciates that some families wish to show their thanks by giving gifts to individual class teachers, at the end of the academic year, or because the family is leaving HFS. Whilst the school truly does appreciate the kind generosity of our families, we are bound by the recently introduced Anti-Graft laws. Please do support the school in this important matter and adhere to the following instructions regarding gift-giving at this time.

  • Leaving teachers and other leaving staff members may be presented with gifts.
  • All leaving families may present gifts to any HFS staff member.
  • Faculty members for academic year 2017 / 2018 (Ms. De Klerk, Mr. McCrimmon, Mr. and Mrs. Munden, Mr. Blacklock), cannot accept any gifts from those students who will remain at HFS for the new academic year.
Thank you very much for your kind consideration and support in this matter.

Dear Parents, Students and Staff,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter. It has been wonderful to see the gloriously sunny weather recently, and this has been a timely reminder for HFS and all our families to consider skin safety in the sun. Please ensure each child has a peaked cap and refillable water bottle when coming to school each day, both clearly labeled with the child’s name. Parents can apply sunscreen before the children come to school, however, no adult at HFS can apply further sunscreen to the children during the day. Additionally, students are not allowed to apply sunscreen to each other.

HFS Sports’ Day and a change to the school programme

We are looking forward very much to the annual HFS Sports’ Day which will be held at Spanish Fields on Thursday 15th June, and Mr. Moss will send home further information regarding this nearer the date.

As Thursday 15th June was the only available date at Spanish Fields for the event, there will be a change to the weekly programme at HFS. As I have mentioned above, the warm weather has arrived in Ulsan, and we are aware that this will almost certainly be the same for our Sports’ Day. Consequently, all children will go home at the conclusion of the sports’ meeting from HFS, at no later that 1 p.m. This will allow some recovery time for our students, and our staff! To compensate for this, Wednesday 14th June will be a full school day, and follow the regular Thursday timetable and curriculum. Please see below:-

  • Wednesday 14th June – school hours 8.55 a.m. to 3.15 p.m.
  • Thursday 15th June – school hours 8.55 a.m. to 1 p.m. (latest)
Rising Stars soccer school will still be at the usual time on Thursday afternoon.
Families leaving HFS

This term will unfortunately see some of our families moving on. Leaving families must inform the admin office (admin@hyundaiforeignschool.com), and the class teacher, at least one week in advance of any leaving date. Please also discuss with the class teacher the printing of this term’s report, if this is required before Friday 23rd June, when all end of year reports will be sent home.

HFS Open Morning Saturday 20th May from 10 a.m.

This Saturday HFS will hold an Open Morning to present information regarding the new academic year. Although all families are invited to come to this meeting, it’s primary purpose is to provide information for families who are new to HFS, or may be considering joining our school. Much of the information in this session was covered in the Parents’ Information Session held last March. If any families were unable to attend that meeting, please do join us tomorrow to hear our proposals for the new academic year.

Newsletter Term 3 Week 4

Posted in - Newsletter

Dear Parents, Students and Staff,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter. After our recent break, the pace of life at HFS will quicken with much to complete before the end of this academic year. There will be many activities for our students including our annual Sports’ Day, Maths Day and end of year assessments, and end of year trips for all year groups. With this also being the time that some of our families will also be leaving the school, it will be very important for all our students to value these final weeks of this academic year. It is an opportunity to reflect upon, and appreciate, the friendships that have been made, and the experiences they enjoyed during this time.

Earthquake Drill

The school carried out another Earthquake Drill this morning, following Government instructions. The drill was completed quickly and without incident. A test emergency message was sent by text to all families at approximately 9.45 a.m. this morning, following the protocols in place for a real event. If you did not receive this test text message, please contact the school administration at admin@hyundaiforeignschool.com in order to check family contact details.

Term Three Extra Curricular Activities

Please see the table of activities for this term.

Art Auction Friday 12th May @the Clubhouse from 7.00 p.m.

TONIGHT’s the NIGHT! All of the canvases your children have painted will be auctioned off at the Art Auction. First item up for bid at 7:30 pm!! So, come to the clubhouse at 7 pm, grab a drink, an appetizer, and take a look at the canvases before the auction starts! (Please bring cash for your purchases.)

Assessment Weeks May 15th – 25th

During these weeks, all students will have assessments in Mathematics and English, with students in Year Three and above also having an assessment in Science. The data from these assessments will be used to inform the end of year full academic reports, and also the three-way Student / Parent / Teacher conferences coming up next month.

As always, we strongly advise against any attempt to ‘cram’ or revise for these assessments, as this can frequently have an adverse effect at this late stage. We always try to ensure this is a stress-free experience for all our students, and we hope that this will also be supported at home.

Please check your child’s class page on the website for a timetable of assessments.

Maths Day Friday 26th May

We are looking forward very much to this year’s Maths Day, which will be an opportunity for our students to enjoy exciting Maths investigative activities. It is hoped that this will provide some stimulating relief after the assessments, and also encourage enthusiasm for this subject amongst some of our more reluctant mathematicians. Further details will be available on the website class pages nearer the day.

HFS Open Morning Saturday 20th May from 10 a.m.

We are looking forward to hosting our Open Morning and Information Session next Saturday. Although all families are invited to come to this meeting, it’s primary purpose is to provide information for families who are new to HFS, or may be considering joining our school. Much of the information in this session was covered in the Parents’ Information Session held last March.
