Newsletter Term 3 Week 2

Posted in - Latest News

Dear Parents, Students and Staff,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter. It has been very quiet at HFS this week with our older students enjoying the residential trip to Tongyeong. The accompanying teachers have kept the school updated at all times and all concerned have had a wonderful trip so far. I am sure all families are looking forward to welcoming the students home today!

We will be posting plenty of photographs and comments regarding the trip on our new Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/hyundaiforeignschool/, so please LIKE this page and visit regularly next week for further updates.

Changes to the monitoring of the ambient air quality

As a result of increased concerns regarding air quality and levels of particulate matter (PM), the Korean Education Ministry announced on April 27th that they have revised their “response manual for schools, to deal with particulate matter” and will introduce more stringent guidelines in the near future.  According to the revised manual, when the concentration of PM in the air, as monitored by Air Korea of the Ministry of Environment, is measured to be “bad” (PM 10µm (size), the bad category is from 81-150, PM 2.5µm, the bad category is from 51-100), kindergartens, primary and middle schools will ensure that their students will stay indoors.

HFS will implement this new policy on air quality in line with the Korean Education Ministry’s  guidelines.  The school will constantly monitor the ambient air quality index made available by Air Korea under the Korean Ministry of Environment on their website and restrict outside access accordingly, to ensure the safest possible educational environment for our students.

Criteria of PM Concentration in the Air Announced by Air Korea of the Ministry of Environment

PM Level Good Average Bad Very Bad
PM 10 0-30 31-80 81-150 Over 150
PM 2.5 0-15 16-50 51-100 101

Residential trip to Tongyeong Y 5 – 8

Posted in - Tongyeong Residential Trip

Dear Parents,

We are looking forward to waving off the students on their exciting trip tomorrow. A gentle reminder that students should be at school for 6.40 am, so the bus can leave promptly at 7 am.

As you will know, students are able to bring their own phones, and will be allocated a period each evening during which they can call home. Please bear in mind that the students will be active all day, and will not be in possession of their phones whilst partaking in the activities, and you are requested not to call the students directly at any time.

If there is a family emergency, and for all other queries during the trip, please contact the school office on 052 250 2851.

The teachers will have two phones on which they can be contacted, if a family emergency occurs outside office hours.

Phone A – 010 9742 2945

Phone B – 010 3981 1945

These numbers should only be used in case of emergency. Please also support our accompanying staff by refraining from using these numbers except for emergencies, by not calling students directly, and by directing all queries to the school office.

The school will provide daily updates on the students’ activities via a dedicated email list, and on the website ‘Tongyeong Residential Trip’ page. We will also provide an estimated time of arrival at school for the students’ return on Friday.

Thank you very much for your support of this residential trip, and with those matters raised above.

Kind regards,

Tony Blacklock

Newsletter Term 3 Week 1

Posted in - Latest News

Dear Parents, Students and Staff,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter, and welcome to Term Three at HFS. I hope all our families enjoyed a relaxing and peaceful holiday. As ever the final term at any school is by far the busiest, but even more so for families at HFS, as this term will the final at our school for many of our families. I do hope that despite this, it will also be one of the happiest.

Please do check the newsletter for details of the many events that are scheduled for this final term. We are also very pleased to announce our new Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/hyundaiforeignschool/. Please LIKE and visit this page regularly for information regarding upcoming events, and reflections and photographs of day-to-day life at HFS. For our Korean families, we have also established a school blog on the popular Naver platform, which will contain similar information translated to Korean. http://blog.naver.com/hyundaiforeignschool.

Cambridge Checkpoint assessments

As our Year 6 parents will know, these students have commenced the Checkpoint assessments. Ms. Strang has been invigilating the assessments so far, and is very pleased with how our students approach what can be a very stressful period. Ms. Strang and Mr. Fairclough have provided a full, in-class revision programme. Please help to reduce stress levels during the weekend by avoiding any temptation to ‘cram’ or revise for next week’s assessments. Any attempts to do so at this late stage may well have an adverse effect on performance. Light reading, fun and relaxation, topped off with ice cream and pizza, is the recommendation for this weekend.

Packing List for Tongyeong trip

A gentle reminder to please check the packing list this weekend to ensure all travelling students have the requisite clothing and equipment for next week’s residential trip.

HFS Music Competition 2017

The event is open to all students at HFS with an intention to provide HFS student musicians an opportunity to perform solo or as an ensemble in front of an adjudicator and the school community (family and friends), and to receive constructive comments from the judge for the further development of their music skills. The primary benefits to the contestants are the experience of performing alone or in a small group, and a critique from someone other than their regular music teacher. The benefits to the audience are the experience of taking part in the event as an audience and the second experience as a future possible contestant. Parents are welcome to attend as this is also a celebration of successful learning at the school.

Genre: Singing, instrumental play or a mix of the two and performing as a solo or with an ensemble.

If you are a musician, please apply for the audition. The application form will be displayed at the foyer in the main building, please enter your name.

Date: Wednesday, 10th May 2017
Time: 2pm
Venue: Music room

Please prepare and bring a short piece of music to the audition, or your instrument other than a piano. You will be given some useful tips and comments regarding your musical talent and skills from the judge.

Good luck!

Sena You
Creative Arts teacher
