Dear Parents,

We are almost half way through our final term and things are heating up around us as well as at HFS as Summer sets in. We are all enjoying the fine, bright weather and clear air. I am happy to share with you this week’s announcements.

HFS Sports Day

It was a pleasantly warm day full of sunshine, perfect for our students to show off their athleticism in a mix of individual, class and team games. They all competed to their best and displayed superb sportsmanship in a day full of fun and excitement. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to the PTA for their assistance and for providing a delicious treat to our tired athletes. A great day of healthy physical activity was enjoyed by all. Here are some pics of the day’s action for you to view.

Residential Trip and Trip to Gyeongju Bird Park

On Thursday 30 May and Friday 31 May Hanmaeum center will be closed and access will be restricted. Fortunately, the Year 4 to 9 students will be away on the residential trip to Busan from Wednesday 29 May to Friday 31 May. The bus will depart promptly at 8:20 am on Wednesday 29 May. Please ensure that your child has all the necessary items on the packing list. I am sure they are eagerly anticipating the fun learning activities and experiences that the teachers and staff have planned for this trip. The FS1/2/Y1 and Y2/3 classes will also make the most of the building closure by attending a full day trip to the Gyeongju Bird Park and botanical gardens. It will be a full-day trip with the school bus departing directly for Gyeongju and returning by 3:30 pm to Sangteville apartments for you to collect your child. There will be no Art club on Thursday 30 May. Thank you to all the parents who have submitted the 10,000Won payment and completed the online permission form. If you have not completed the form, please do so by clicking here and submit the payment by Monday 27 May. A friendly reminder that the school will be closed on Friday 31 May. There will be no access to Hanmaeum center for the day.

Parents Information Evening on Wednesday 5 June

I am pleased to report that we will conduct an “Information Evening” on Wednesday 5 June from 6 pm to 7 pm. There will be a presentation from myself regarding the academic calendar for 2019/20 and the class and staff structure for next year. I will also speak briefly as to the results of our recent CIS evaluation. Mr. Paul Kim will speak to and answer questions relating to the planned future relocation of the school. It will also be an opportunity for you to voice any questions you may have regarding the school. I look forward to seeing you there.

Personal Property Policy

Having heard the concerns of a number of parents and witnessing firsthand the effects that bringing toys, smart watches and electronic devices has on the positive learning environment that we are fostering at HFS it has become necessary to create a new policy regarding these items. From June 1st students will no longer be allowed to bring toys, jewelry accessories and electronic devices to school. It is clear that they result in conflict and negative feelings between students and are a distraction to teaching and learning. Toys and devices that are brought to school will be confiscated by the teacher and returned at the end of the school day. The policy will be updated in the parent handbook and smart watches and phones will only be allowed to accompany students on school trips where their care will be the responsibility of the student. Teachers may request students bring in toys or electronic devices for specific learning activities such as “Show and Tell” or ICT classes but parents will be informed in advance and the use of the items will be regulated. It is unfortunate that we have had to modify our policy and hopefully we can revisit it in the future. Thank you for your cooperation in this regard.

Best regards,
